Welcome To Karachi is a light hearted film with an interesting concept. Starring Arshad Warsi and Jackky Bhagnani in the lead roles, a lot is expected from the former in the comic genre. Of course, Arshad Warsi won’t disappoint you with his comic timing, but then he doesn’t give you a reason enough to watch the film. Nobody does!
Kedar Patel (Jackky) is the foolish son of Mitesh Patel (Dalip Tahir) who wants to go to the US but is denied visa on numerous occasions due to his surname. Kedar works on his father’s boat with his friend Shammi Thakur (Arshad Warsi), a Navy officer (who was court martial’d). The two together host private parties for clients on the boat.On one such occasion (when they fled away from the shores without picking the clients), the boat get caught in a storm and sinks leaving these two alive, ashore with their safety jackets. When they wake up they discover that they have landed alive but not on the Indian lands. They are now in Karachi and need a way to escape.Before they can realize the same, an Al Qaeda operated blast takes place at the shore and the investigating intelligence officers begin to doubt Shammi for being responsible. While the intelligence team is looking for him, Shammi and Kedar are finding their way out of this dangerous country.
They meet the goons who agrees to help them for money and then they also meet an Al Qaeda top gun by accident who decides to turn them into Mujahideens. Kedar and Shammi are trapped in difficult situations and want to go back home. Then comes in the picture the US Consulate.
Thus is a twisted story of this wasted film.
Good things first (cuz they aren’t too many either)-
Arshad Warsi’s comic timing is unparalleled. You’ll fall in love with the locales of Pakistan! That is for sure. Guess that’s about the good things!
The issues with the film are many- inclusive of a poor poor script that fails to put in a linear perspective the issue of Karachi. The excessive stereotyping in the film is ominous. The script fails. And… and… and… Jackie Bhagnani’s Gujarati and that Gujarati accent is no less than a dose of slow poison! Lauren Gottlieb is pretty as a Pakistani intelligence officer and does well for her role, sadly doesn’t get enough screen time.Also, the editing sucks.
There are songs that don’t fit in and plot twists that are uncalled for. Beyond all of it, the running time of the film is over 2hrs and 20minutes. Thanks to the length, every minute is like a fried moment. Also, apologies but the excessive Gujarati that has been forcefully dumped to make the characters look authentic fails miserably for trying too hard.
The film could’ve been linear, short and crisp and with more focus on Karachi rather than the terrorists! Execution has gone wrong and the writing scatters to pieces!
Good lord, I pray that you avoid this film this weekend!
